Introduction
“The End of Fear”
Dear fellow man, woman, teenager,
Do you suffer from secret fears,
phobias, or anxiety and have searched for their true explanation and permanent
treatment that you so desperately need, but have never yet found? Do you
experience panic attacks without warning or explanation as multitudes in the
world do today? Then you could be a victim of Agoraphobia -
that mysterious and terrifying disorder nobody seems to understand and from
which victims rarely recover. This
phobic condition is now incorrectly called ‘panic disorder’, an entirely new
medical category that includes any phobia or nervous disorder with reoccurring
panic attacks. However, what is now
termed panic disorder is very
often agoraphobia, a distinct and subtle phobia often confused with other
phobias, disguising the true number of its victims. This error has come about
because agoraphobia is still a mystery to
medical science!
Agoraphobic victims may also suffer from the more common
phobias such as fears of - darkness,
heights, closed spaces, or death
(also known as, nyctophobia, acrophobia,
claustrophobia, and phanatophobia, respectively). Like other victims of
these phobias, they too may avoid shops, buses, crowds, planes, traveling, and
fear collapsing, or being seen panicking, in public places. However, whereas
these victims eventually learn the nature of the object they fear, agoraphobic
victims never truly understand the
object of their phobia. All phobias
arise because victims cannot cope with or escape from, the object of their
fear. But
whereas these more common phobias can often be avoided or escaped from,
agoraphobic victims can never avoid or escape from the object of their phobia.
This incapacitating nature of the illness, its
unpredictably and violence of attacks, makes it the most serious and
devastating of all the phobias.

More Facts about Phobias and
Secret Fears
The World Health Organization has now extended the
definition of Agoraphobia, i.e. ‘fear of open spaces’, to include other
phobias, such as claustrophobia
(‘fear of closed spaces’), thus broadening the definition of Agoraphobia. This now incorrectly includes victims, who do
not have this illness, proving that agoraphobia remains a ‘mystery’ to medical
science today. Sadly, this ignorance can
only prolong the dreadful suffering of its victims, for Agoraphobia must first be acknowledged a distinct and unique phobia before it can be correctly understood
and treated.
If
you suffer from agoraphobia or other secret fears or phobias, or wish to help
someone who does, you have come to the right website. Some fifty years ago, the
author was afflicted with agoraphobia and other phobias without help or
even explanation of the name of my illness.
The name ‘Agoraphobia,’ was then barely known and anyone who had this
disorder without ‘remission’ (remission
is rare), suffered secretly with it for the rest of their life. This was
due to the lack of medical knowledge and one’s fear of being
thought insane. Unfortunately,
even today the understanding of phobias and agoraphobia has advanced very
little. However if you are
a victim of phobias or secret fears, you can receive help as I did and
recovered. My book has helped many
others. It will help you too.
Perhaps you feel beyond all help as you have been fighting
your fears desperately for years and have finally given up. I promise
that this time you will not be fighting,
as this is not the answer to serious phobias.
However, their true explanation
and effective help is the answer. I received this when I was completely
helpless and you can too. Others have
done so through my book, which is a self-help manual and this can be your
experience.
You now have the opportunity to learn the true
scientific cause and treatment of Agoraphobia, other secret fears, phobias, and
anxiety that remain a mystery to
medical science. Only this knowledge can help victims
recover permanently from Agoraphobia
and other phobias. My book was first named, The Mystery of Agoraphobia, but was
changed to its present title because of its wider application. ‘The End of Fear’ explains the true cause and treatment of all phobias, agoraphobia, secret fears,
dreads and anxiety, which
form the foundation of the entire
spectrum of human fear and emotional illness.
If you are concerned about phobias,
fears, or anxieties not yet mentioned, ‘The End of Fear’ clearly explains these
also. It establishes that human
personality is a complexity of secret fears, dreads, and phobias, having a
universal cause. Written in a scientific
manner, but without theories or suppositions, it explains also the cause and treatment of the more common fears of - heights, closed spaces,
darkness, and death that
are so often confused with Agoraphobia, the ‘mystery’ phobia. You will then be able to understand your
own secret fears or phobias - their origin
and cause, because you will
understand the true cause and treatment of human secret fear, anxiety, and
dread.
‘The
End of Fear’ scientifically categorizes these more common fears, as primary, basic or fundamental, elemental
phobias* directly related to, but not identical with, Agoraphobia. Medical science has never considered this
fact, or relationship. However, the true explanation and treatment of
agoraphobia, other phobias, fears and anxiety must essentially include this
understanding. For without it,
Agoraphobia will continue to be the 'mystery’ it has remained to medical
science since it was first observed increasing universally, some fifty years
ago.
The book traces the origin and cause of human secret fear
and establishes why and how these more common phobias relate to
Agoraphobia. I know of no other literature that even considers this subject.
‘The End of Fear’ thereby, provides the true cause and treatment of human secret fears, anxiety,
agoraphobia and other phobias, so desperately needed today!
(*Phobias of natural elemental objects).

Description on the back cover of “The End of Fear”
"Sensible and
desperate people today are not looking for any more theories - but a real
practical solution to their problem. At last, for the first time in our modern history of
ever-increasing anxiety, fear and emotional illness, we have a complete
explanation and program of treatment for fear and agoraphobia - the horrific
and tragic phobia sweeping the world and afflicting multitudes with
unpredictable panic and terror - and other abnormal fears that have long defied
explanation and permanent treatment by medical science.

This monumental revelation
of the mystery of agoraphobia and other phobias is of immeasurable service and
comfort to humanity and millions whose lives and happiness are being impaired
and destroyed by their secret fears, dreads, anxieties or phobias.
These victims worry
constantly over their fears, wondering if they are rational or sane. Pellew disposes of such injurious myths,
establishing conclusively that phobias of darkness, heights, closed or open
spaces, death and certain other abnormal fears are not irrational or
unreasonable, but acquired through rational learning processes and originate in
the soul. They are, fundamental,
primary, elemental or basic fears, common to all mankind,
and possessing a spiritual origin or cause.
They must be understood and treated accordingly, in
order to bring permanent cure.
These fears have been erroneously classed with
truly irrational fears - from which these particular victims never suffer. Victims are not irrational or insane after
all. They may be treated and restored to
permanent health and happiness by following the program of treatment provided
herein.
This highly accomplished,
informative and comforting book is long overdue - offering perhaps the very
first real light on this most urgent and complex subject. For all victims of fear and anxiety, and
practitioners alike, it is indispensable - as well as of a wide general
interest. Weldon Pellew is the father of
eight children and lives in

The Nature of Fear and
Phobias
Fear is common to man and animal. It is a natural feature of life that can
protect, harm, paralyze, or kill. Concern here is with those fears, and
fear-states that destroy, debilitate, plague and impoverish life. Some of these
are - anxiety, worry, dreads, phobias and other unpleasant disorders connected
with fear – panics, negativity, depression, morbid moods, weariness,
sleeplessness, compulsive behavior ( egs. over-eating), poor health,
distressing physical symptoms, etc.
Fear, is a sense or awareness of impending danger, disaster, or doom to
self or others. It is a negative and
unpleasant thought, emotion, or mood. Some fears are stronger or more intense
than others are. For example, direct confrontation with a perceived life-threatening
object, animal, or situation. Such experiences can produce a phobia, i.e. a long-term fear or dread
of some object or situation. Everyone
has some secret fear, dread, or phobia in his or her life. Some become incapacitated
by these fears because they can produce long-term or chronic, anxiety that
interferes with normal daily living and happiness. Anxiety is itself ‘fear’ and may consist of worries, tensions, and
dreads - often due to major or minor phobias that form the basis of the victim’s
chronic anxiety state.
The phobia has this feature – fear of being trapped in a threatening,
inescapable situation while lacking the resources to cope. This produces anxiety, panic, and terror.
Worry and dread follow and persist whether or not the victim is in the
immediate presence of any feared object. Anxiety is accompanied by physical and
emotional changes due to its unpleasant thoughts and their symptoms - dreary
moods, guilt, self-blame, depression, compulsive thoughts, depersonalization,
suicidal thoughts (suicide rarely occurs in agoraphobia), etc. Unpleasant bodily sensations may be -
palpitations, faintness, sweating, weariness, etc. These and
like symptoms characterize the phobic
state.
Fears and phobias can be real or imagined. Whichever they are, they are real to the victim. Someone
has said, ‘I have suffered many things in my life, but most of them never
happened’. Fearful or anxious people suffer much, but often quite
unnecessarily.
Like pain,
the intensity of fear is usually unknown until it is experienced. Human fear therefore, is often of the unknown, the uncertain, or the unpredictable.
This and the unpleasant nature of fear, produces fear of fear itself.
Agoraphobic victims become terrified by the
strange nature of their fear that produces panic and terror at any time or
place, without warning or reason. Unlike
victims of the more common phobias – of closed
spaces, heights, darkness, or death (claustrophobia,
acrophobia, nyctophobia, and phanatophobia, respectively),
agoraphobic victims are usually unaware of the object of their fear and
they fear the peculiar nature of their fear instead. Agoraphobia is the worst type of phobia, the
most emotionally devastating and crippling of them all. It can last a lifetime in some. The memory of
its dreaded panic attacks, their total unpredictability and terror, plunges
victims into spooky, morbid, moods, for days, weeks, or even years.
Agoraphobia and
Claustrophobia are often Confused
Due to the apparent absence of any feared object, Agoraphobia is frequently confused with claustrophobia, i.e. ’fear of confined
spaces’- an entirely separate phobia. The definition of Agoraphobia (’fear of
open spaces’), has now been broadened to include also other phobias, egs. fears of crowds, buses, supermarkets, and
other situations that might be perceived as confined
or closed spaces. This and other confusion concerning Agoraphobia continues
to prevail in psychological reports, revealing the ignorance of science
concerning the disorder.
Other common human fears are - fear of death, fear of
life, fear of insanity, fear of shame, fear of embarrassment, fear of poverty,
fear of dishonor – fear of loss of love, or of some other valued object or
possession, etc. There are countless
other fears - real and imagined.
Phobic and anxiety disorders arise from unfortunate
experiences in life, sometimes due to direct confrontation with an inescapable,
feared object or situation. This may
include accidents, illnesses, operations, and other physical or emotional
trauma. Poisons or toxins in the blood,
which are sometimes the result of the chronic anxiety itself, can also produce
them. A timid nature or phobic
tendency can be inherited like any physical or
nervous weakness. However, the common,
basic or elemental phobias*,
including Agoraphobia, are learned.
‘The End of Fear’ establishes this fact - one not generally accepted by psychology. Due to the confusion within this science over
the cause and nature of phobias, it erroneously considers excessive fears or
phobias of such objects to be ‘unreasonable’, or ‘irrational’ - i.e. not learned. Fear and anxiety can be communicated from one person to another, egs. from a phobic mother to her child. Phobic and anxiety disorders are commonly attended by feelings of self-failure, guilt, or
blame-worthiness, whether this is real or imagined.
Psychological
Treatments Fail in Agoraphobia and other Severe Phobias
There are several psychological therapies for agoraphobia and other
phobias. None proves permanently
successful with agoraphobia and other severe phobias. Three methods are briefly discussed here.
1) ‘Approach
and Withdrawal Therapy’: This
treatment encourages victims to approach and withdraw from their feared object
or situation, or until their fears become too intense to continue. This is conducted in a controlled environment with help and
instruction. Victims are
urged to continue repeating the therapy in order to re-educate their
response to the object they fear.
2) ‘Floating or
Going, with Fear’: Victims are instructed to cease fighting or
resisting their fears or emotional and physical symptoms, and to ‘float, or go with’ these. This therapy is also intended
to reduce in time, the intensity of the victim’s phobia.
3) ‘Control of
Thoughts through Education’: Victims are instructed
that they can better control their fears and emotions when they understand
their thought processes concerning these. The idea is that fear can be reduced by understanding one’s thoughts and
re-directing them. Fearful thoughts and emotions can thereby,
be brought under control, rather than submitted to. Victims are also taught to think positively instead of negatively in
order to help overcome their fears.
All these methods fail with Agoraphobia and other severe phobias. Benefit
comes however, from offering victims hope,
a program, and promise of cure. But as with similar therapies, it is the support and
encouragement that benefits, rather than true explanation and treatment. With
the 'approach and withdrawal' method,
victims of agoraphobia or other severe phobias know that this too must fail,
since it is totally impossible to confront again their greatest fear! This method may
be effective in the treatment of minor fears and phobias, but not major
ones. Furthermore, with Agoraphobia,
neither the victim nor therapist knows exactly what is feared to begin with, or when the next panic attack will reoccur.
It is therefore, impossible for victims to ‘approach
and withdraw’ from their feared object.
Any victim of a severe phobia would agree that to attempt to ‘float or go with’ their fear is both
ridiculous and impossible. Such methods
reveal gross lack of understanding of the intensity and stubbornness of these
phobias and psychology’s failure to provide their true explanation and
treatment.
‘Control of
thoughts by education’ does have its
place in the treatment of phobias, but not at its commencement. Victims of Agoraphobia and other serious
phobias cannot control their thoughts or emotions and may not
be taught to do so. To overlook this fact and attempt to educate them
thus shows poor understanding of these phobias.
Many victims have spent their lifetime trying to
think positively about their fears and control their thoughts and emotions.
Phobias have arisen because they lack the necessary resources to protect them
from their fears and are unable to obtain these resources. They must start on
the first rung of the ‘ladder to
recovery’. This is to understand the true
cause and treatment of phobias and agoraphobia. Then they will be in a
better position to begin to learn how to help themselves. There is however, far too much disagreement
and confusion in psychology over the nature and cause of these phobias to
provide this essential understanding and permanent help for victims.
The Total Helplessness of the Phobic Victim
It is easy to forget that victims of Agoraphobia, other phobias, and
anxiety have spent a lifetime trying to confront and control their fears and
have failed. Now strong phobias, anxieties, obsessional
thoughts and emotions have the power to defeat
every attempt to overcome them. Each new hope and method of treatment
offered must also fail and be ‘dashed to the ground’. This is the nature of
these stubborn disorders; victims are in a position of total helplessness and have lost all hope.
After years of suffering and loneliness they are
saying, ' I am now incapable, a hopeless wreck, unable to think or act
normally. I can never expect to be happy
or capable again. I can never do this,
or master my fears or my circumstances and make good my life.’ It is not just that one is incapable now that
terrifies and adds to fear and helplessness, but the thought that this
incapacity must last forever. It is never that today one is incapable that
gives fear its appalling power, but the thought, 'I shall never achieve the essentials of life, and happiness, the
efficiency, which together make life worthwhile. Due to my illness I will never
be a normal person again'.
Victims feel they have Missed out on Life
Victims feel that they have' missed
out on life' because of their fears and become sadly resigned to their fate
- longing and seeking for a way out, but never finding it. Only the true explanation and treatment of fear and phobias can set one permanently free from agoraphobia and
restore effectiveness and happiness again.
’The End of
Fear' explains the ‘mystery’ of Agoraphobia that psychology
cannot explain because this science overlooks the true origin of human
fear. It also establishes the cause of all phobias, secret fears and
anxiety and that the phobia is, ‘the
fear of being trapped in an inescapable, threatening situation, without the
resources to cope with that situation’. These absent resources are explained, and how they
may be restored. Psychology has failed to do this.
Also that, the
phobia is a feature of the normal
human personality, present in varying
degrees of intensity, in everyday situations in the lives of many people.
The inability to make a choice or decision under pressure; to speak or perform
in the presence others; to sit a test or examination; the fear of meeting
certain people; or simply feeling trapped
by life’s circumstances – all are common human experiences and phobias.
More than any other emotional disorder, Agoraphobia demonstrates the spiritual nature of man and cause of his
secret fears. The victim’s sense of ‘fate
or fatedness’, helplessness, hopelessness
and total despair appear in all mankind’s chronic long-term fear and
anxiety states. He is once again ‘the
child weeping in the darkness - alone, lost and afraid’. No man can understand
his plight or comfort him. How does the
parent comfort their child? By love, understanding, tenderness and compassion. The presence
or absence of love determines
emotional and mental health, happiness and stability in life. Psychiatric patients lack the capacity to
give or receive love. Phobic and anxiety
victims find it difficult or impossible to give and receive love.
Psychology knows that these resources are required to
bring the peace of mind and stability they so desperately need, but cannot meet
this need. Neither can medical science alleviate the intolerable burden of
guilt - real or imagined -that these victims carry. Yet each sufferer may receive these essential
resources of love, faith, and hope
that will bring recovery. Psychology does not accept mankind
as a ‘creature of purpose’. Rather, he is viewed as a product of evolution, time, and chance - his brain,
a ‘chemical machine’, and his personality, the ‘sum total of heredity and
experience’. Consequently, it is not in the position to meet these needs.
‘The End of Fear’ demonstrates that humanity is universally afflicted
by five primary, basic or fundamental, elemental
fears* common to all – phobias of - heights, closed or open spaces, darkness,
and death. Agoraphobia or, ‘fear of
open spaces’, however, is less common and far more mysterious. Medical science considers excessive fears or
phobias of such objects to be ‘irrational’
or ‘unreasonable’. However, ‘The
End of Fear’ demonstrates that these phobias are not irrational or unreasonable as supposed and that victims must be
reassured of this fact and treated accordingly.
Although psychology observes that these victims are
otherwise rational, intelligent people, it continues to class their fears as irrational and unreasonable. It does this even in spite of the fact that these
victims are never afflicted with long-term irrational fears or delusions as are
‘truly irrational’ or psychiatric patients. ‘The End of Fear’ refutes such harmful suppositions and establishes
that phobias of these primary, elemental objects are both rational and reasonable and victims, rational and sane.

(*Phobias of common, natural elemental
objects).
